School-age children and program staff
Age Grouping
Place children in groups according to age as set out in Schedule 3.

A Director may approve mixed age grouping provided that:

  • When more than 20 per cent of children are from the younger age group, the ratio of employees to children and the group size required for the younger age group is used.
  • Younger or older children are placed in only one group for each category as set out in Schedule 3.

During periods of arrival, departure and rest, the staff/child ratio may be reduced to 2/3 of the required ratio. See Schedule 3 for more information.

RATIONALE

Children are grouped by age in order that broad similarities in interest, abilities and attention span may be considered in program planning, physical space and equipment.
